Pediatric Dental Cleanings & Regular Check-Ups

Scheduling pediatric dental cleanings and regular check-ups with your doctor can help detect and address dental issues early on. Dental cleaning procedures remove bacteria, plaque, and tartar from teeth and gums, helping to maintain optimal oral health in children.

At Black Point Dental, Dr. Ferguson provides comprehensive family dental care for your children.

First Dental Appointment for Children

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that a child's first dental appointment occur when their first tooth appears or no later than their first birthday. The Black Point Dental team ensures that your child's first visit is comfortable and stress-free.

Regular Dental Check-Ups for Children

Children should have a regular check-up every six months to ensure early detection of any dental issues. Some benefits of routine check-ups for your children include:

  • Early detection of dental issues
  • Ongoing monitoring of your child's oral health
  • Prevention of cavities and tooth loss
  • Primary care for periodontal disease (gum disease)

What to Expect at Your Children's Dental Check-Up

During the appointment, Dr. Ferguson will examine your child's mouth, teeth, gums, and jaw to identify potential problems or decay. He will also inquire about dietary habits to help diagnose dental issues.

Additionally, reviewing the oral mucosa will aid in ruling out any concerning dental conditions.

During this visit, Dr. Ferguson may also perform a bite assessment, fluoride treatment, and any necessary X-rays.

What to Expect at Your Children's Dental Cleaning

Professional dental cleaning ensures optimal oral health for your child and prevents further dental decay. During the cleaning, Dr. Ferguson's team will scale your child's teeth to remove plaque and tartar and polish them using a special paste.

This painless procedure typically takes between 30 minutes to an hour.

Black Point Dental's team ensures that our youngest patients are comfortable and calm before starting treatment.

Ensuring Good Oral Hygiene

Proper dental hygiene involves brushing teeth, gums, and tongue twice daily and flossing daily. Dr. Ferguson recommends avoiding sugary drinks (juice, milk, etc.) in baby bottles to prevent dental decay in children.

Rinsing and cleaning your child or baby's mouth after using a bottle also helps prevent plaque formation. Once your baby's teeth appear, brush them gently with a child-sized toothbrush and a small amount of fluoride toothpaste.

As soon as your baby has two teeth that touch, begin cleaning between their teeth daily with floss. Ensure your children always brush their teeth after eating and before bed. Maintaining good oral hygiene habits can help prevent many dental issues in your children.
